The Sacramento Mountains represent the southern-most tip of the Rockies. It's one of the few places in America where you can enjoy 18-holes of outstanding championship golf in the morning at Desert Lakes and ski your way into the twilight at the nearby Ski Apache Ski Resort.
Rising to over 8,000 feet about sea level, the Sacramento's offer an unparalleled diversity of wildlife and botanical variety. There are at least 18 rare plant species located in area including Sacramento prickly poppy, Alamo penstemon, button cactus, and Villard's pincushion cactus. Larger drainages and canyons contain relatively dense arroyo-riparian vegetation with Fremont cottonwood, Arizona ash, netleaf hackberry, and desert willow.
The mountains are home to black bear, elk, mountain lion, bobcat, turkey, and many other animal species. There is a particularly large and healthy deer herd here and cliffs provide suitable habitat for desert bighorn sheep and nesting raptors such as the peregrine falcon. The gray vireo may also occur in the area. Pronghorn are present in the grasslands in the southern portion of the area, and Black-tailed prairie dogs are likely present. These grasslands also provide habitat for Aplomado falcons.
Besides great golf, the Desert Lakes/Sacramento Mountain area provides ample opportunity for spectacular hunting, photography, hiking, rock climbing, backpacking, horseback riding, botanizing, rock hounding, and archaeological sightseeing.
Specifically, Desert Lakes is at 2351 Hamilton Road which is just off highway 54 in Alamogordo, close to the southern intersections of highways 70 and 54.
